Well, put a kit or two together but I am going to start from scratch guitar number 1. It will be a christmas present for my Dad (without nitro of course, that will come after xmas). Never really set my mind to this but now is as good a time as any. Anyway, here is what I have in mind:

Thinking SJ or OOO body
Honduran Mahogany B/S and neck - Straight grained
Sitka Top
Adi bracing
Ziricote Peg Overlay, Fretboard, Bridge, Bindings, end and heel graft
Spalted Maple Rosette
ADDED: There will not be any fretboard inlay except 2 mudflap girls at the 12th fret. will have side dots

Figure the ziricote appointments will make up for the lack of honduran figure.

I will be looking for wisdom and advice as I go so I hope you are all ready!!

Going upstairs now to "go shopping" in the "shop" to make sure I have it all ready.

Looking forward to seeing your work in progress...

Best of luck!

Frank, take pictures, lots of pictures. And notes. Take notes. You won't remember what you did or how thick it was, etc. And take lots of pictures. We want to watch you build. Oh, and have fun while you are doing all this.

Might lack figure in the back & side but is the finest tonewood you can use for a guitar (OK everyone knew I'd say that). But, it will make a mighty fine sounding guitar. My prejudice would make me change the top for one of Shane's Lutz tops or a Euro top, as I feel they are more responsive to fingerstyle and more gentle styles of play, but many people like sitka so if it's what you have it will be OK.

As you build do take a lot of notes, measurements impressions and of course pictures, not just to show us here but they are a valuable resource for your future builds.

Colin

Your number 1 is going to be great! I like your wood choices.

Your Dad is going to be surprised for certain. Make sure you get pics of the presentation as well.

Like my friend Lillian recommended, keep a journal for each build. It's a nice legacy to include if and when the guitar gets passed to another generation.

I too look forwards to pics along the way

I have to admit, I have been kicking this idea around myself. I'll be looking forward to seeing some pics!

Sounds like a great guitar! You can get the mud flap ladies from Andy DePaule at www.luthiersupply.com. Good luck with your build, and take lots of pics!
